Neck pain can be a real… well, pain in the neck. Neck pain is a sure-fire way to keep you from doing the things you love and the things you need. (It can also keep you from doing the things you hate, but let’s talk about that later.) Whether you’ve had this pain for 24 hours or 24 months, you’re probably wondering “Why is this happening?” and “How do I fix it?”.
But not all neck pain is created equally. So why should it all be treated the same? There are many different pain-generating structures in the neck which may also masquerade as pain somewhere else – so it’s important to have it examined by a medical professional.
There are many causes of neck pain:
• Inactivity
• Sitting too much
• Poor posture
• Improper lifting technique
• Aging
• Inadequate sleeping support
• Prior trauma
And that’s to name just a few. Sometimes, you know exactly why you’re having the symptoms you’re having. And sometimes, it’s not clear why you’re having neck pain, or what caused it. But it becomes clear – the impact on your life is significant.
Neck pain has a way of robbing you blind. Suddenly, the simplest of activities in your daily life become challenging: getting dressed, reaching into a cabinet, or even just getting a good night’s sleep. And all of those things that you really enjoy – like running, biking, playing tennis, lifting in the gym, lifting your kids? They become unimaginable. But it’ll just go away, right?
Neck pain can sometimes be easy to ignore, until it’s impossible to ignore. We often hear “I’ve just been living with this pain”. So, some questions come to mind:
The answers may sound familiar. Many people have been dealing with their neck pain for months and years. And what have they done for it? Most often: Nothing. But it stands to reason: If you do Nothing you’ll get Nothing. Maybe the pain “wasn’t that bad”, or it went away on it’s own before – but it’s just not going away now.
For some, it’s the fear of not knowing what it will cost to have your neck pain addressed. However, the greater question is – “What is it costing you to NOT fix it?”. What is it costing you in lost sleep, extra days off from work, decreased productivity? Is it costing you time away from your family, lost time playing with the kids? Or are you still paying for your gym membership, unable to workout or go to class?

Common symptoms of neck pain include stiffness, soreness, and difficulty moving the neck, which can extend to headaches, muscle spasms, and pain that radiates down the shoulders or arms. These symptoms can significantly impact your quality of life, making routine activities like driving, working at a computer, or even sleeping uncomfortable and challenging. Persistent neck pain can lead to reduced mobility, increased stress, and a lower overall sense of well-being, as it often interferes with both physical activities and the ability to relax or focus.

We see hundreds of patients with neck pain. People experience neck pain for various reasons but sitting for long periods, working at a computer, and frequently looking down at a phone screen are among the leading contributors to developing neck pain.
When you have neck pain, it can severely impact even the small aspects of your life, like sleeping. If you’re not sleeping, you’re not healing. If you’re not sleeping, you’re miserable, and everyone around you is miserable too. Neck pain can affect your ability to sit for work, watch a movie, pick up your child or grandchild, or carry bags of groceries. It can also impact activities like running or going to the gym.
You may have already tried several things to manage the pain, such as taking pills like ibuprofen or Tylenol, using hot packs or taking hot showers, getting massages, trying acupuncture or cupping, or seeing a chiropractor. These methods might have provided some relief, but perhaps it’s not long-lasting or hasn’t fully addressed the pain.
Our approach is different. We view the whole body as a system. We examine other areas around your neck that contribute to its movement and functions, such as your upper back and shoulders. We help retrain your body to maintain better posture and ensure better stabilization around your neck. Then, we introduce exercises to strengthen everything, providing better support.
By doing this, we help you get back to functioning better in your life, whether it’s running, weightlifting, yoga, or simply picking up your kids. If you’ve been struggling with neck pain, we could help you feel better.
